Great Scale Model Train Show - Timonium, Md. April, 2010
Red Yellow Blue slots were filled throughout the weekend. Patrons were down from recent shows while participation was still a highlight. Model Railroading is still FUN, to quote one of our favorite hobby mags.

Even though the air conditioning unit died, a good time was
had by all. Ten layouts were set up representing various
clubs around the mid Atlantic region. As usual, some very
nice deals were available this year from the various vendors.
The Pig roast went well as did the auction held on Saturday
evening.
We lost radio control on Saturday morning. Spent most of the day
troubleshooting. Dave had his droid WiThrottle going as
well.
Sunday we lost radio early on. We then found out that every
radio layout in the building had been out. We weren't sure what
has been added this year as it worked fine the last 4 years in
that building. We're trying to decide whether to go with a new
duplex throttle or just pick up an IPod and use it instead.

Set-up started at noon on Friday in the north hall and we had 18 members come to assist. The layout went together fairly easily, with the two leveling crews being only inches apart when they met; final clampdown took place right around 3pm. By 5:30pm all the connector tracks were in place and the majority of the electrical work was completed; we could have run trains on DC at that point. Finalizing the DCC system and troubleshooting the layout happened at about 7:30pm, when we left the layout only needed a track cleaning to be fully operational.
Overall the trains ran smoothly on both Saturday and Sunday; we had the usually issues with submarined rail joiners and humps at module interfaces, but no major issues.
We switched all layout operation to DC a little after 3pm on Sunday and started the teardown process. The last train was stopped about 3:40pm and full teardown commenced. Teardown was complete about 5:30pm.
We’d like to thank everyone who participated, especially the coordinator Tim Nixon and co-coordinator Jack Walsh.

Thank you to all who came to help with the set up! Even an hour helped make a difference. We started unloading at 11:45 and had everything connected by 3:45. Casually checking DC and DCC, we called it a wrap by 5.
In the dark evening hours on Wednesday, a second walk-off of the space revealed that the recently modified layout plan was a tad too ambitious. Having dealt with a major issue in the morning, this was a bummer. But in the end, we accommodated everyone who pledged a module in a 31 x 25 space. Thanks to Mark Bandy for the last minute diagram as yours truly was clandestinely pacing off the space-real time feedback. And thanks to some who were told bring this one, no that one, not he first one for their understanding.
I can’t speak for the vendors, but I appreciate the work Howard Zane and Ken Young and the Turf Valley Hotel did to ensure everything they agreed to was in place for us; tables, space and a nice flat [cart] to assist in the load-out from our wide-door, semi-private entrance. While I appreciate the wide-open spaces of Timonium, it was wonderful to set up the layout in a nice, carpeted room!
Our trains ran and ran well. We seemed to have a very young, enthusiastic crowd of all who were amazingly well-disciplined. I saw no small 0-5-0 assists while I was at the layout. Fro the most part, I suspect there were some of the usual Baltimore area RR fans and a local crowd coming down to see what it was all about. They had a great show provided by BANTRAK. All of the club members were friendly, patient and informative with the mixed crowd. It’s what we’re about!
From the comments I had, our club members enjoyed the experience and were complimentary about the venue. We were packed up by 5:15.
I hope the Turf Valley Show continues. Many thanks to all who contributed to this terrific holiday show!
